Words and Sense

Words should save us time and trouble. Science is full of specialist words. Here are a few:

symbiosis

osmosis

precipitate

nucleus

Once you know what these words mean you can communicate easily with someone else who also knows what they mean. Imagine how difficult it would be if these words did not exist. Each time you would have to describe in great detail what you meant. This would take many words instead of just one.

Here's something to try. Take the simple sentence, "I posted a letter." Try to say the same thing without using the words "posted" or "letter"

I left home, walked to the corner and put the mail in the box.

Actually it was Sara who dictated this sentence to me - well done Sara!
